Iranian foreign minister states India will continue to buy Iran’s oil
India is Iran’s second-largest oil buyer after China. India will continue to buy Iran’s oil. Rather India is quite committed to continuing the economic partnership between the two nations. This was reported the Iranian foreign minister after a meeting with his Indian counterpart. This was ahead of US sanctions aimed at halting Tehran’s oil exports.
The United States of America President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from an international nuclear pact with Iran in May was followed up with plans to impose new sanctions against the third-largest producer among the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Washington is trying to push and pursue its allies to cut Iranian oil imports to zero once the sanctions take effect on November 4th.
Iran’s foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif met the Indian foreign minister, Sushma Swaraj in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
When Zarif was asked about Indian assurance about whether India will continue to buy Iran’s oil or not, he said, “Our Indian friends have always been categorical in terms of their intention to continue economic cooperation and (the) import of oil from Iran. And I heard the same statement from my India counterpart.”
Zarif also added, “We have comprehensive cooperation with India and that comprehensive cooperation also includes energy cooperation because Iran has always been a reliable source of energy for India.”
India has already reduced its oil intake from Iran. But it has still not been decided whether the business with Iran will completely be halted or not. Even in the previous round of sanctions, Zarif also said that Iran wants to expand its bilateral relations with India.
It is completely clear from the recent meeting and the previous relationship between the two countries during the sanctions that India will continue to buy Iran’s oil.
